TRAD QUILTS

My more abstracted quilted artworks are rooted firmly in established quilting tradition. When Ezra Pound issued his modernist dictum, "Make it new!" he was not suggesting that we throw the past away, but rather that we find new ways to see it, use it, understand it, make it. I frequently return to more traditional designs and to making quilts themselves as a way of renewing my craft, refreshing my eye, and revisiting the relationships between tradition and innovation. Like musicians who mine folk tradition for pieces that speak to our modern life, I continue to explore traditional block designs, hand-piecing techniques, and fabric motifs for inspiration.
